Enhancing our “Predatory Traits” with CAPS!!!

Predators are focused on a – Revolutionary Radical Strategy – that is always well conceived, well planned, time-phased and engineered to be flexible, with true resilience and vigilance thus epitomising the symbol of the predator character. Where we act cool and calm, calculated in our aims, we are preserving our strength and not showing our weakness until the decisive moment. Designed and equipped for precision styled work. The predator waits his turn; he ambushes his pray and avoids conflict by doing so. Poised for that decisive moment, at which a calculated blow should be rendered, with precision; towards the “strategic target” of the body. Here he uses all his strength, power and tactics – to make the conclusion – final and the conflict brief. His strategy reduces any possibility of on-going confrontation, thus avoiding tension, as well as avoiding the possibility of injury to him-self or allows the objective to escape and evade.

Plan beyond your current capacity and you will gain the capability to grow

Although you might think I am playing with words here, that is not the case. It is a principle that exists, that we should all become aware of. It is far reaching and it works, something that could change your life, if only you change your way of thinking, and practice it more. It is boundless, and could change the world, as you know it, by just changing your perception.

We are talking about building capacity; where capacity in this instance would refer to talents, a mental aptitude, and or brain activity, a proven way of solving problems, which gives you greater ability to overcome your challenges. Capacity goes hand in hand with capability. Then capability would refer to resources, means, and finances, finding the means towards rising above your current situation.

In life as in business the issues we would normally mention, as contributors for a lack of growth, and a barrier to success. Stays more or less the same, and we refer to them as resources or capital for instance, whatever it be, this principle stays universal. Continue reading

A Call to duty

Economically things are heading towards  negative growth globally, the belt is tightening; and we can all feel and see  the effects already early on in the new year.

Who is to blame? What is the problem? Why can’t we get it right?

Well some believe it’s very simple, if we get the basics right the rest will follow; what is stopping it is a lack of vision, discipline, and true LEADERSHIP

World Leaders are in the midst of a worldwide crisis, and everyone is still just looking out for himself;

The problem is actually several problems that are compounding the effect of the global economic crisis;

  • Population growth rates are overtaking economic growth;
  • We are growing so fast, as a global population, that at the current rate we won’t have enough resources left;
    • food, water, and then other factors like
    • education,
    • and jobs for all, by 2020 will be a source of  concern.

The facts speak for themselves; the world population has gone from 1.6 billion in 1900 to 7 billion in October 2011, and the U.N. projects that it will reach 9.3 billion by 2050, and over 10 billion by 2100.

A Question; Strategic Management vs. Strategic Planning, what’s the difference?

Its not always a clear cut between pebbles, some are white some are brown, but who gets to wear the crown?

In both strategic, and academic circles, we all strive for the maintaining of the highest standards of intellectual thought; especially when referring to the philosophy of strategy. In plain English – it’s all about perception as we deal with philosophy, and any philosophy changes constantly; or should…thereby influencing strategy directly as a result.

Thus “philosophy”; both in the business and strategic sense dictates when it becomes BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY, and then as a result also becomes a STRATEGY OR STRATEGIC.

When the basic of “FORMING STRATEGY“,  is met, and the elements of  strategy become apparent, then we should have;

  • a vision,
  • a mission,
  • goals,
  • and action plans…
  • then we refer to something as being or becoming Strategic; or as STRATEGIC PLANNING.

1)Strategic plans are made up of action plans;

2)Now we get to Strategic Management, it in turn gives us a required business perspective; a business perspective is the organisation of all activities, in a structured manner. We want to or need to organise things, in order to be able to measure and gauge things like our; performance, progress and quality, all whilst these strategic plans unfold, into smaller action plans,and then into finality.

The whole purpose of management is to add;

  • structure,
  • process,
  • procedures,
  • policy,
  • resources,
  • and organisation.

All in order to connect all the resources, with systems, and get results in the form of products or services, that impacts on other initiative, activities, and plans, that then starts coinciding with the business model, and plan, and its ideology, to make all its aims happen.

Management as a process; becomes systematically inclined and also procedural, it steers these “action plans”, or “strategic plans” with intent, that are otherwise in effect just seen as dead pieces of paper, which needs to be interpreted, and given life. Management becomes this means.  By combining ideas, with effort, substance starts to emerge with an expected resolve or end state,, coming from some place, somewhere between practical and philosophical – dealing with all aspects between knowledge and wisdom, then when backed up with factual relevance – then we are seen to manage.

Describing management and actually doing it is difficult, it becomes two worlds, as we all experience life from different angles, and levels of difficulty. Never-the-less, it’s these “words” that we use, that should unite us in mind and effort to perform the same functions. Therefore it’s very essential that we find the same meaning in terminology so that we may all benefit from both the knowledge and the wisdom it brings.

Then only will we know the true distinction – or difference – between them, planning and management.

Very philosophical, yes that’s the point. It somehow never becomes a simple enough explanation, when we just take out the words strategic, and try and deduce some common meaning. When in fact, planning and management are two very different animals.

Then we are only left with, management and planning. There you have it sweet and short, straight to the point. The one is all about management the other planning, or is it?

Some will argue that these terms do not exist at all; People try and get way to clever (and Philosophical) for their own good. then this happens, then you get aspects arising like; Strategic management vs. strategic planning, what’s the difference?

This can be attributed to the relationship between words and their meanings, that also become culturally significant, and extremely complicated when we want to take or when taken to literally. For instance; if we take the literal meaning of the words used and get their synonyms, then Strategic means planned”, then that would in fact imply that you can’t come up with something like “planned planning” or can you, what does that mean or imply anyway?…  Nor could you tell if it is still the same thing? Then Strategic planning should have a significant meaning if we choose to explain something significant by merging these two words, should it not?

When in doubt, we should also look at a words connotation; thus implying – what is suggested as well as its denotation – what our intellect tells us it should imply, and then we will know what we are looking at.

This aspect belongs to the field of semantics. For now though, what you need to know is that words do not have single or even simple meanings – they have implicit meaning.

Traditionally, grammarians have referred to the meanings of words in two parts: their;

  1. Denotation; referring to the literal meaning of the word
  2. Connotation; referring to a relationship to the word either emotional or otherwise; something which the word evokes in people…

1) Strategic + Planning;

  • As a denotation; Strategic; literally means – planned.
  • As a connotation; Strategic; implies – organised or deliberate actions…
  • As a denotation; Planning; literally means – preparation
  • As a connotation; Planning; implies – scheduling or setting up

So if we connect the two words now; we get strategic planning meaning or implying;

  • As a denotation = Planned preparation
  • As a connotation; = Organised / deliberate – preparation or setting up

2) Strategic  + Management;

  • As a denotation; it implies supervision
  • As a connotation; it implies organised, or administration
  • Strategic Management; as a denotation; planned supervision; and levels of supervision, or hierarchy in business
  • Strategic Management; as a connotation; deliberate organisation of actions – The deliberate preparation then of actions consistent with organisation…



Here we go..  Strategic + planning; implies; planned or deliberate preparation then

                              Strategic + management; implies planned supervision or administration 

So yes, they are still two totally different animals

And then you also get Grand Strategy  and Business formation

In short what is STRATEGY really?

Ask around, hay friend! What is STRATEGY exactly?

Nine out of ten times someone will have some sort of an idea…very few will peg the mark…and be able to give you the detail of it, this brings strategy into peril. People need to know and understand that everything they do, eat, hear, smell, taste and say daily is because of some form of STRATEGY.

The history of strategy is the history of our world, and the future of man.

We are and were born hunters and gatherers first – afterwards we just become; all self-centred, and aim to exploit our habitat and those in it, with the use of strategy and scheming, to our advantage. It’s all programmed and hot wired into our psyche, to manipulate and use emotional blackmail, we tend to get what we want from a very young age by using these approaches; it’s all forms of strategy we practice.

Strategy exists in order for us, to get what we want, so why don’t we know what it means to be strategic?

We are at risk of losing all the benefits and application of real life strategy, if we do not clarify and quantify how it’s to be seen, used, understood, referred to and handled.

What is Strategy in the true sense of the word or by nature?

We need to make sure that everyone understands not its implicit meaning ;( implying what we think we understand it to be, all in general terms, with only limited insight).

NO! It’s part of life skills…We want and need people to understand and relate to strategy from its explicit meaning; (what it really implies as a matter of fact, and practices, to be representative of this, this is what strategy truly is, and can do.)

Moving from the Implicit; where our answer would be, it means something like planning…

To Explicit; by being able to give a simple definition; 1*Strategy is the 2*art of 3*planning and 4*directing large 5*scale 6*movements and 7*operations of 8*business nature.  Furthermore we should also be able to explain the words that describe the complexity, to create connections for ourselves and others; then we will be able to describe elements that make up strategy. By starting with the basic description of strategy and what it implies.

  1. Strategy; is best described as an approach; a way of doing something’s, by utilising tactics and initiative.

 

Tactics imply;

  1. The ability to use something/ anything to your advantage, from very simple to very complex, it can also take on any form, like; policy, procedures, devices, mashines, skill, knowhow – anything that you can use to give you a power, or leverage. Then we get more complex form of tactics; with manoeuvre, technology…anything that will give you an advantage, or make you faster, or keep you in power, or give you the ability to take and lead by initiative, coercion, enslavement, mediation, the list is open ended. Then lastly War; from infantry to nuclear bombs; it all sorts under this aspect of tactics.
  2. Initiative on the other hand is; the thinking behind all of this, how we structure and organise our selves is called initiative, also entrepreneurship is included. This includes the design of something, also the planning, organising, orchestrating, politicising, and campaigning for an event to take place. It is the cognitive; the thinking part, the thinking about thinking, the critical thing and communication of these ideas. As well as the rallying of agents and means, and the selling of these concepts. How we connect resources, Knowledge and effort to deliver on a goal, this is using our initiative, being labelled as being very resourceful, and cunning, stems from being able to use all of these mentioned elements to add value and then deliver a result.
  3. 2. Art; implies; having certain skills, talents and or ability to do things with people, or perform actions with resources and create something… if you can do it consistently then you have mastered the Art of something, you then become proficient at what you do, then you are labelled an artist.
  4. 3. Planning relates to; the amount of preparation that was set aside beforehand, to think about ways and means of aching goals. This action can be done alone or as groups, or even segmented, where sections are planned and the eventually joined to become the master plan, or blue print. Project management functions mainly on planning. It also looks at forecasting, and scheduling so that we could say with some amount of certainty how much it will cost, what is needed, and how long it will take etc. Other terms used here are; prioritizing, systems, design, risk, budget, influence, techniques, goals, vision, mission, objective, review, action plan, strategic review, closing the gap, swot analysis, analyzing data, etc…
  5. 4. Directing; much like a conductor directs and orchestra, in the same fashion we need to direct all forms of planning into one act. This is leadership, management network, and supervision functions, as well as structure, systems, policy and procedure, all of it has one aim. To deliver the results contemplated in the time, and with the exact specifications in mind.
  6. 5. Scale; refers to the size of the project and the amount of effort required.
  7. 6. Movement; is simple enough; this implies that we need actions, and acts to make them happen, some will be specific, other vague… yet all co-ordinated and calculated. Things won’t happen if we don’t act.
  8. 7. Operations; this is where it all happens on the ground, where we plant the seed, where we do what we had contemplated with effort and time is spent doing  it, performing the acts contemplated…
  9. 8. Business; is supply and demand; in exchange for money…

I hope to some extent; that we can now have 9 out of ten people that can tell me what strategy is- If not, then strategy is still in peril.
